ANCHOR BOLTS

Definition
WHAT AN ANCHOR BOLT IS
An anchor bolt fixes a structural or mechanical element to concrete. Load is carried into the concrete either by a bend, a welded plate or a head that develops bearing, or — for post-installed types — by mechanical expansion or a bonded chemical grip. The visible part is only the threaded projection; the engineering sits in what is embedded.
For project work, anchor bolts are supplied as sets: bolt, nuts, washers and, where required, a template. Supplying them item-wise and marked to the drawing is what keeps a foundation programme moving, because it removes sorting and identification work at the site gate.

Installation
HOW ANCHOR BOLTS ARE INSTALLED
Cast-in anchorage is unforgiving: almost every site issue traces back to setting out rather than to the bolt itself.
1 · Setting out
The bolt group is positioned in a template matched to the base plate hole pattern, checked against the foundation grid reference and fixed so it cannot shift.
2 · During the pour
Level, plumb and projection are re-checked as concrete is placed. Threads are covered so laitance and splash do not reach them.
3 · Before erection
Threads are cleaned, projection is verified against the drawing and nut engagement is confirmed before the steel arrives at the foundation.
Selection
CHOOSING THE RIGHT ANCHOR BOLT
Cast-in anchors are the default for new foundations because they are cheaper, carry higher load and are fully protected by the concrete. Post-installed anchors exist for retrofits, additions and corrections, and are governed by the concrete condition found on site rather than by the original design.
Within cast-in anchors, the split is between bent profiles and plate or headed profiles. Bends are economical and suit most column bases; plate anchor bolts are used where higher pull-out capacity is needed within limited embedment depth.
Coating follows exposure, not preference. Hot dip galvanising is standard for exposed and coastal work — including most GCC export projects — with nut allowance adjusted for the coating thickness.
