Foundation Bolts

What Are Foundation Bolts and Where Are They Used?

A plain-language explanation of foundation bolts, how they transfer load into concrete and where they are specified across industrial and infrastructure projects.

What is a foundation bolt?

A foundation bolt is an anchor embedded in a concrete foundation so that a structure, base plate or piece of equipment can be fixed to it. One end is cast into or grouted within the concrete; the other end projects above the finished level and is threaded to receive a washer and nut.

The embedded end is shaped — bent, hooked or fitted with a plate — so that load applied to the projecting end is transferred into the concrete rather than pulling the bolt out.

Where are foundation bolts used?

Foundation bolts appear wherever a steel structure or machine meets concrete.

  • Structural steel column base plates in industrial buildings
  • Solar module mounting structures and tracker foundations
  • Transmission towers, gantries and substation equipment
  • Pre-engineered buildings, warehouses and sheds
  • Machinery, pumps, compressors and process equipment

What information is needed to order them?

A drawing or sketch is the fastest route to an accurate quotation. Where a drawing is unavailable, share the diameter, total length, bend or plate detail, thread length, projection above concrete, material or grade preference, surface finish, quantity and delivery location.
