Anchor Bolts

Anchor Bolts for Structural Applications

How anchor bolts function in structural steel connections and what distinguishes the common anchorage types.

The role of the anchor bolt

In a structural steel connection, the anchor bolt transfers tension and shear from the column base plate into the concrete foundation. Its performance depends on embedment, concrete strength, edge distance and the anchorage detail at the embedded end.

Common anchorage types

  • Bent bar anchors — L and J profiles developing mechanical anchorage through the bend
  • Plate anchors — a welded end plate distributing load over a larger bearing area
  • Straight anchors — relying on plates, nuts or bond within grouted pockets
  • Fabricated anchor systems — welded arrangements for non-standard requirements

Installation accuracy

Templates hold the bolt group in position while concrete is placed. Supplying templates with the bolt assembly is one of the most effective ways to protect installation accuracy on a busy site.
