Why fasteners are galvanized
Hot-dip galvanizing applies a metallurgically bonded zinc coating that protects steel fasteners in outdoor, coastal and industrial atmospheres. It is the default corrosion protection on foundation bolts destined for long-life infrastructure.
Points to agree before production
- Required coating thickness
- Thread accommodation — oversize tapping or thread allowance for the coating
- Whether nuts and washers are galvanized to the same requirement
- Any inspection or documentation the project expects
Alternatives
Zinc plating suits lighter-duty and indoor applications. Plain finish is used where the fastener is subsequently painted or embedded. The right choice follows the exposure condition and the project specification.
